I woke up this morning in a cold sweat; my eyes wide and unfocused
barely recognize the room around me as my own. Last night I dreamt I
was being pulled underwater by an unseen beast. I tried to scream but
nothing came out water as water filled my lungs. I tried to free
myself from the death grip around my waist but the harder I struggled
to get away the tighter the grip around me became. I can feel a sharp
pain in my back as my body is slammed against the sea floor like a rag
doll, creating small clouds of smoke around me as I disturb the sand.
Looking up I can see a huge white moon and a million stars in the sky
above me allowing a little light to seep in beneath the depths. As I
turn my head I wish there was nothing but darkness surrounding me as a
huge leviathan with huge eyes and a gaping mouth coming towards me.
Its tentacles burning and ripping at my flesh as I try to escape. As I
sit upright in bed trying to catch my breath I can hear music coming
from the other room. Its Yykooms' latest effort Unholy Opera, I cant
help but laugh at myself for waking up in such a panic, but as I get
into the shower I cant help but be excited because this afternoon I
will meet the men who deliver nightmares.
When you think of France Trash and Metal may not be the first things
that come to mind, but Yykoon is out to change that. Their music is a
brilliant blend of brutality, melody and atmosphere that will keep you
banging your head. For Yykoon creating atmosphere and using things
like violins and keyboards to create it is something that just come
natural to them. " I am a fan of atmosphere" Stephane says " so I
always want to blend atmosphere and melody into my music"
For their latest disc Unholy Opera the guys used one of the most
brilliant horror writers to ever live as a source of inspiration, HP
Lovecraft. However just cause this disc is based on Lovecraaft's work
don't just expect a gallery of sea creatures. More over it's a
darkness and uncertainty that awaits us when we step beneath the
waves. "Lovecraft sets a lot of scenes from the sea in his writing. We
wanted to try and recreate some of those images musically." Stephane explains. "I also enjoyed being able to incorporate one of my favorite writers into my music"
If you're going to be in Europe this summer you should make one of the
many Metal festivals going on this part of your trip. Yykoom is going
to be making the rounds this season and they put on a brilliant show,
but if you're like me and am going to be stuck state side this year we
will just have to spend more time listening to Unholy Opera
