Black Waltz began in 2002 with three guys who wanted to further explore and expand on the darker side of music which had always inspired them. With Chris on vocals, Wayne on guitar, Rick on bass and a laptop on drums the guys recorded a four track cd that was release via their web site. After the release of the cd the guys decided to put Black Waltz on hold in order to pursue other interests and projects. Chris picked up were he had left off teaching math at UC Irvine. Wayne was given the opportunity to tour with one of his favorite bands Faith and the Muse, while Rick continued playing with Wailing Wall.
During their time off Black Waltz continued to receive requests for their now out of print debut cd as well as show and interview requests. Strange that a band would decide to take such a long time off at the very moment they're beginning to peak in popularity. "It just wasn't the right time" Wayne said when we got to hangout with the bad before the show at Goldfingers, "we were all involved in other things, but when we realized we were onto something we decided that it was time to get back to it."
Even though they were anxious to head back into the studio, they couldn't jump back into recording right away. They wanted something to help enhance their sound. To do that they decided to retire the laptop and hire a live drummer, enter Brandon a student at Cal Poly working on a degree in Urban and regional Planning, Brandon is also the drummer for Wailing Wall. "Brandon and I work really well together", Rick said "I can play a few chords for him and say don't worry you'll get it and he does it's really cool." Not only can Brandon pick on Rick's vibes on bass he shares the same musical vision as the rest of the band which make for almost effortless collaboration "As far as bands go this is probably one of the best collaborations I've done" Wayne told us. Black Waltz still continues to experiment with ways to bring out the music while maintaining Chris's crisp and powerful vocals. "Take Tool for example" Rick said, "they're constantly doing new things with their music, but they make sure to keep clear vocals, and that's what we want to do keep pushing the music, but sure we find ways to continue to use Chris's pretty voice."
Right now Black Waltz is performing all over LA and continuing studio work on yet to be named second album. If you haven't seen Black Waltz live be sure to check them out soon and be on the look out for their next offering. For more info on Black Waltz check out their website at www.Blackwaltzmusic.com. |
