Vetusta Memoria II: Dialouge with the Stars

Candlelight Records

 3.0

Blut Aus Nord's Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue with the Stars wasn't quite as heavy as I was was expecting it to be. There are some seriously brutal vox on the handful of trax that have vocals. They bluster and rage against a back drop of sonic bliss that was more relaxing and soothing than anything. The interludes between trax are stunning. They have an intricate softness to them that doesn't always work well with the madness of the rage filled vox. I don't know if they set out to make the worlds mellowest metal album. If they did they are spot on. If not well the album still kicks ass and maybe they will be harder next time.

Utopia
AFM Records
3.0

Utopia is big loud thunderous Power Metal. Bursting at the seams with massive riffs and monster keyboard solos. In short, its pure fucking rock and roll. And still this album manages to rub you the wrong way. The lyrics just don't match the awesome of the music. They start off with something that sound as if its going to be second coming of the gods. Something that is so brilliant it could make the Odin himself shake in his boots with fear. But they kill it with lyrics that are more wuss rock than anything. I know that may sound a bit harsh. And lord knows as a whole Power Metal bands bring more than their fair of cheese at any given moment. But this is super cheese even by Power Metal standards. Where tales of woe and pleas to die over shadow the ferocity of the war cry. Utopia would work a lot better if it was strictlyinstrumental, then it would be brilliant.

The Atlas Moth
A Glorified Piece of Blue Sky
Candlelight Records
3.0

A Glorified Piece of Blue Sky is full of contradiction. One minute its blaring hostility at you through growling vox and massive riffs. The next it slows down to almost a crawl. Soothing you with light sound distortions, slow plodding guitar groves and understated harmonies. Its an interesting and cerebral album that seems to go nowhere at times. Then finds its footing in the chaos, homing in on a single emotion or theme and boring it into your brain. And just when you think you know where the album is going it will veer off in to the abyss again leaving you to wonder what the fuck just happened here. Butdon't be confused here. Interesting hardly means brilliant. It just means interesting. Yes it makes you think, but only as you wonder where The Atlas Moth is trying to take you. The wonders and the whys only made less frustrating because these guys know what their doing musically. And it ends up being far more pleasant to just sit back and enjoy the music then to try to sort out what the fuck these guys are playing at.  A Glorified Piece of Blue Sky is hardly the best thing you will run across as the year comes to a close it does rank among one of the more interesting.

Faust
From Glory to Infinity
Paragon Records
4.0

Faust's From Glory to Infinity may take a moment of two to get used to but once you get there it is a perfect storm of Black Metal brutality and bestial sacrilege. Staying true to their Black Metal roots there is no love lost for the tenants of organized religion. What sets Faust apart from the rest of the horde is their approach to a religion free world. Instead of bludgeoning you with claims of infinite evil and pledges to dark masters Faust instead infuses their sound with horror. Dragging you through the shit and mud to the chaos of the abyss. No where is that more apparent than the track Holy Hole. A song that is a thought provoking as it is brutal. Filled with the gore of busted hymens, piss, blood and cum. It can be easy to dismiss Faust as just another Black Metal gore band. But if you peek behind the lyrics there is a lot more going on than that. They are using these  images to get you to think of a world free of the confines of religion. Almost saying hey you wouldn't eat shit and blood just cause some old dudes tell you to right? So why do you hate, kill etc for some dudes with an old book? In there lies what makes Faust awesome the gore is a tool to draw you in and hopefully bring you a bigger message. Still some people cant get past the whole scat, piss blood thing. And for those that cant you'll be happy to know that Faust is just as brilliant musically as they are bloody. You would have to be an enemy of music not to love their thick heavy riff and catchy hooks. Instead of assigning roles to the band membersAleister and Ghiluz take turns on solos. Their styles both conflicting and complementing each other to give the album more depth and texture. As they switch from power metal inspired licks to black metal savages. In From Glory to Infinity Faust have created a perfect storm of intellectual brutality that is as interesting as it is entertaining.

Seize
Constant Fight
Alfa-Matrix
3.0

I went into Constant Fight ready to blow it off. Nothing more than just light weight synthpop with an air of darkness to it. The kind of thing that blends behind you as seamlessly as wall paper.  After a few listens though it began to elevate itself from the realm of bland synthpop to something that became an enjoyable piece of background noise. While the singer doesn't have a great range, but her smooth raspy delivery gives the album an feeling of seductive mystery. A bit of texture to what comes dangerously close to losing you with tedium. Seize doesn't rely on samples or heavy guitar riffs to create their sound. They work at stringing together fairly interesting electronic beats. While they are able to stay away from a lot of the cliche sounds, they use the same four of five beats a bit too often. After awhile things all begin to blend and sound the same. That being said they are a bit better than most of the other electronic bands out there and over time I think they will begin to develop a more unique voice that will really grasp the ears.
