1349 Revelations of the Black Flame Candlelight Records 3.0 When a band has been around as long as 1349 has, you begin to develop certain expectations. You expect them to put together something thats solid. A singular voice with something to say. Even if they are sticking to something as well worn as their dedication to Old Scratch, you expect them to add some kind of awesome to familar material. Almost none of these things happen on 1349's Revelations of the Black Flame. Musically it definately lives up to the standard that they have set for themselves over the years. Its solid Black Metal filled with heavy riffs and thick blast beats. Which prove nothing more than these guys can play.Something we already knew. There are a few places one the album that are annoying boarding on insulting. On the track Maggot Fetus, the title alone is annoying. After being in the game this long why does 1349 still feel that they have to rely on shock value to get our attention? Its the kind of move you expect for a bullshit band that barely knows their way around a drum kit trying to sell records. But coming from a decent band with a following, its insulting and the fans expect better. Revelations of the Black Flame is decent at best but is nothing to get excited about.

Diary of Dreams (if) Metropolis 3.0
Diary of Dreams latest effort If is a beautifully done album but it doesn't stray from the the heavy dark formulas of darkwave synthpop. The melodies that they string together are deep, rich and moody with a few danceable moments. But that's the sort of thing I expect from diary of dreams. Fluid dreamy synth lines and deep masculine vox that are as sad as they are brooding. I suspect that's whats taken me so long to get to this album. Its exactly what I expected to hear. There is no straying from the path. No experiments nothing different nothing new. Leaving you with an album that is solid and safe.just what you expect for diary of dreams.

Evil Cowards Covered In Gas Metropolis 4.0 Evil Cowards is the side project that features Tyler Spenser from Electric Six, and William Bates from Fall. I never thought it would be possible for these guys to top the sexy absurdity that that they get with their other projects, especially Electric Six. But listening to Covered In Gas, I think I have found the Holy Grail of silly sexy electronic fun. Technically Evil Cowards is a separate project from Electric Six or Bates of Fall, but you can hear the same sorts of musical influence in both projects. Most of it is in the same vein of the work done in other places. Lots of random pop infused dance beats. Flavored with Jazz and layered with sax riffs. Withvox that range from the deep and sexy to the high pitched and silly. But always with interesting harmonies. Its the lyrics that make Evil Cowards a stand alone entity. It has a harder dirtier edge to it. Sex Wars fills you with images of the hot nasty sex in the mostinappropriate places, but is so unapologetic about it that you cant hold back your inner voyeur. While you plot working leather and napalm into your own play time later. The deliciously violent Chopping up the teacher is another that speaks to the bands daring do. An English pub song complete with tuba. Its the disturbingly brilliant story of murder and cross dressing. That has the added benefit of deflecting any suspicion of education related murders off of yours truly and onto someone else.Thanx guys! |

Secrets of the Moon
Privilegivem Luspus Lounge 4.0 To say that Secrets of the Moon have created a sonic masterpeice with Privilegivem, may be a understatement. Its everything that makes Black Metal such a powerful force. Privilegivem is as big as an album can get without bringing in a full blow orcastra and guest stars. I think Virgin Blacks's Requiem trilogy is one of the few albums that I can recall that was played with this kind of ferocity and technical brilliance. Listening to this is like heaven and hell, with Secrets of the Moon having one foot firmly planted in the roots of Black Metal. But still open enough to bring in more progressive elements to create an album that is as lush as it opressive in its atmospheres. Whats just as striking as this bands musical prowess is their approach to the lyrics. If you think of Black Metal a creture whose sole purpose is to get you to question the status quo while rocking you ass off, then Privilegivem has achived that a million times over. So when you hear a lyric that says "I dont believe in God" its not that big of a deal when youre speaking strictly in the terms of Black Metal. But for them to say that they dont believe and then ask for forgiveness for having done so if the first place, like in the epic song Harvest. It gives the lyrics another demension to explore. Its lyrics like this that make this album even more amamzing. There are a few places where the growls and scream of the vox interfere with the flow of the album. Where there are too many powerful elements competing for your attention. Still this is minor considering how killer the rest of the album is. If you enjoy brutal, progressive Black Metal Privilegivem is an album not to be missed. |
